If They Love Teens, They Can Reach Teens
When I first started ministry, my plan was to help God save the world. That didn’t work. When I first started ministry, my plan was to be the hero and I just knew all the kids would love me. That didn’t work. When I first started ministry…well, as you can see, I wasn’t very smart. Praise God I’ve learned a lot since then!
With good intentions, I believed that the Lord had given me special gifts to run a dynamic youth ministry program all by my self. After all, I could play the guitar. So what changed my mind? A guy with a graying beard, a spare tire around his waist, and absolutely no musical talent whatsoever. He was one of my volunteers and he was one of the best. Why? Because he loved kids. And because he loved them, they loved him.
My first assumption about him was that he was probably too old to be very effective. Man was I wrong. So take my advice: You can’t do it all alone. It doesn’t matter how “cool” you are or talented. There will never be one person who can reach every kid.
Ministry takes lots of personalities and lots of different skills. Encourage lots of people to help you! Young and old, talented and untalented, dynamic or not – if they love teens, they can reach teens. Press on!
